Free Shop

We have a free shop at all our Pigpen Social parties.   Featuring a varied selection of books, CDs, and vinyl.  Come along and pick up some goodies for free!  We will be accepting donations for Oxfam and Book-Cycle if you have any spare pennies.

What is a free shop?

A free shop is a shop where all goods are free. They are similar to charity shops, with mostly second-hand items, but everything is available at no cost. Whether it is a book, a CD, a record, a piece of furniture, a garment or a household item, it is all freely given away.

The free shop reflects a switchover from scarcity to abundance brought about by increased material wealth due to technological advances and globalization.  The free shop is a form of constructive direct action that provides a shopping alternative to the capitalist framework, allowing people to exchange goods and services outside of a money-based economy.

The roots of the free shop lie in the anarchist movement. Today the idea is kept alive by the new generations of environmentalists who view the idea as an intriguing way to raise awareness about consumer culture and to promote the reuse of commodities.

Book-Cycle provide the books for our free shop.

Vinyl, CDs and DVDs are very kindly donated by Pigpen party people.
